The information in this section pertains to results displayed in the
FCQ data requester for FCQs
used
prior to fall 2006. Information from FCQs is used by
- students for selecting courses and instructors,
- instructors for improving their teaching, and
- deans and department chairs for promotion, tenure,
salary, and course-assignment decisions.
Yes, the results really are used for these things!
Remember that several factors in addition to quality of instruction
may influence the ratings. These include department, class size,
class level, and whether the class is required or an elective.
Average ratings for the pre-fall 2006 FCQ are based on a scale of A = very good to F = very
poor (when computing averages, we use A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0).
Here's what the column abbreviations mean:
Instr group
- TTT -- tenured and tenure-track (was group A on former FCQ)
- OTH -- other primary instructors, including GPTI, adjunct, visiting, honoraria,
etc. (formerly group B)
- TA -- teaching assistants (formerly group C)
- Enrollment
- Number of students enrolled in this section of the course
- Forms returned
- The count of forms with any responses
- Course
- "Rate this course compared to all your other university courses."
Note that pre-fall 2006 scores are shown in the browser display of FCQ data
under the heading "Course 0-4," whereas pre-fall 2006 scores that have been
converted to the fall 2006 and later scale are shown under the heading
"Course 1-6."
- Instr
- "Rate this instructor compared to all your other university instructors."
Both pre-fall 2006 scores and pre-fall 2006 scores converted to the fall
2006 and later scale are shown ("Instr 0-4" and "Instr 1-6,"
respectively).
-
- Ratings below are not converted to the fall 2006 and later scale.
-
- Grade fairness
- "Rate fairness of grading policies."
- Instr access
- "Rate accessibility of instructor."
- Workload
- "Rate workload relative to the credit given."
For this item the scale is 1 = too light, 5 = OK, 9 = too heavy.
- Diversity students
- "Rate instructor's treatment of ethnic minority and female students."
Notes on ratings displays:
- N = no forms returned, S = ratings suppressed because fewer than half
of the completed forms contained responses to the Course Rating item.
